Is St. John Paul officially "The Great," or is this a rhetorical flourish to lend his encyclicals more influence? When he was canonized I read everywhere that it was his personal holiness that was being officially acknowledged, not the correctness of all his teachings or decisions. Catholic social teaching is not doctrine, and it rests on interpretation of political and social event that Popes can easily get wrong. Look at Francis and economics, or John Paul II and headship in marriage. Very botched jobs, I am sorry to say, but if we can discard the earlier pall encyclicals on inerrancy, we certainly are not to be held to the opinions of popes trying to apply the gospel to situations they may or may not fully understand. Popes are not prophets. And from St. Pope John on, each modern Pope has fumbled the ball on key points leaving the Church confused. Meanwhile folks are determined to make them oracles and plaster saints. It does the cause of the Church no favor. - jm
